WORLD MANUFACTURER IDENTIFIER (WMI) CODE

WMI CODE

WMI CODE: Prior to 1980, there was no universally known standard for VIN; therefore, different manufacturers utilized varied formats for these numbers. Modern VINs are made up of 17 characters, excluding the letters I, O, and Q. Vehicle Identification Number (VIN) systems are now based on two similar standards, ISO 3779 and ISO 3780, issued by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) in 1979 and 1980, respectively.

The European Union and the United States of America have adopted compatible but slightly differing implementations of these ISO standards. It establishes a worldwide universal identification numbers system for road cars by defining the content and structure of VIN.

ISO 3779: Road Vehicles – VIN – Content & Structure.

ISO 3780: Road Vehicles – WMI Code.

As India's National Standards Body and a member of the International Organization for Standardization, BIS acts as the WMI coordinator in India, assigning WMI codes to vehicle manufacturers after they have been assigned by the Society of Automotive Engineers Inc. in the United States, the international agency in charge of WMI code maintenance.
