New compliance for Electric Ceiling Fan

The Ministry of Power has issued a notification regarding the compliance of electric ceiling fans to ensure standard compliance and use of star rating. In consultation with the Bureau of Energy Efficiency, the Central Government hereby specifies the following energy consumption standards for electric ceiling type fans:

• Every electric ceiling type fan operated by induction motors and Brushless Electric Motors covered by IS 374 that operate on single-phase alternating current supply up to and including 250V, 50Hz, manufactured, imported, commercially purchased, or sold in India must meet all of the safety and performance requirements specified in the Indian Standard 374 and amendments referring to clauses 8 to 32 of Indian Standard 302 (Part 2/Sec 80).

• The electric ceiling fan manufacturer must be certified in accordance with IS/ISO 9000 or IS 374, or it must bear the Bureau of India Standards certification mark.

• Each electric ceiling fan must have a label with a maximum of five stars with a one-star interval, and the performance of the fan is rated from one to five stars based on its service value.

• Every electric ceiling fan must comply with the energy consumption standards outlined in this notification. (click here for official notification)

Manufacturers must ensure that their product complies with specified Indian standards and is labelled with a star rating.
