ISI Mark is Mandatory for Preservative treated plywood as per BIS IS 5539: 1969. This Indian Standard lays down the requirements, sampling procedure and test methods for plywood treated with preservatives to improve resistance to biological degradation (fungi, termite, borer and other wood destroying organisms). The standard covers important aspects of quality like dimensions, tolerances of thickness, strength of bonding, retention of the preservative and penetration of treatment chemicals and workmanship to assure durability and long-term performance. The IS 5539:1969 specifies proven preservative treatment methods and performance criteria for effective protection in various environments and service conditions. The standard emphasises controlled manufacturing and treatment practices, as well as thorough quality testing, for consistent distribution of preservative and structural integrity of the plywoods. It also provides for marking, packing, and labelling to help with product identification, traceability and compliance checks. Meeting the standards of Bureau of Indian Standards, IS 5539:1969, guarantees that preservative treated plywood meets the national requirements for quality and durability, providing assurance of reliability and suitability for use where biological attack and long life are required.
