In 2023, India plans to add 58 chemicals to the BIS mandatory list.
The Indian government is expected to issue QCO by 2023, making BIS certification mandatory for more 58 chemicals. On 22 December 2022, the Department of Chemical and Petrochemicals (DCPC) of the Government of India conducted a stakeholder consultation meeting to discuss adding 58 chemicals to the BIS mandatory certification list. The Rotterdam Convention governs the 58 chemicals under consideration during the convention. More information on the implementation date of these chemicals' mandatory quality control orders is expected in 2023.
Earlier, the government issued Quality Control Orders (QCOs) for 63 chemicals, requiring BIS certification. QCO for 25 of the 63 chemicals has already been implemented. According to various deadline, QCO of the remaining 38 chemicals will be implemented in 2023.
Once chemicals are added to the BIS mandatory certification list, obtaining BIS certification for chemicals becomes mandatory for manufacturers, traders, and importers to use the standard mark on their products. Manufacturers are not permitted to manufacture or sell products in the Indian market without a standard mark.
To use the standard mark on their product and sell into India, all manufacturers must obtain a BIS license.
