BIS QCO EXTENSION FOR AIR CONDITIONER AND ITS RELATED PARTS

The Ministry of Commerce and Industry released the Air Conditioner and its related Parts, Hermetic Compressor, and Temperature Sensing Controls (Quality Control) Order 2019 to ensure standards compliance and the mandatory use of standard marks.

According to this QCO, getting BIS certification for air conditioners and their related parts is mandatory to use the ISI mark. The Bureau provides a BIS license to the manufacturer to ensure that the product is in compliance with Indian standards. Every manufacturer must get a BIS licence for Air conditioners and their related parts to use the ISI mark. Manufacturers must ensure their product meets applicable Indian standards to obtain BIS certification for AC, hermetic compressors, and related components.

In accordance with this QCO, the following products must meet the relevant Indian standards and bear the ISI mark.

IS 1391 (Part 1): 2017	Room air conditioners - unitary air conditioners.
IS 1391 (Part 2): 2018	Room air conditioners - split air conditioners.
IS 8148: 2018	Ducted and package air conditioners.
IS 11329:2018	Finned type heat exchanger for room air conditioners.
IS 10617:2018	Hermetic compressor.
IS/IEC 60730 (Part 2) Section 9: 2011	Temperature sensing control devices.

This QCO was expected to be in force as of 01.06.2020; however, the date was extended until January 1st of 2023, to meet the demands of industry participants.

However, at the request of some industry stakeholders, the Government of India is planning to extend the deadline by six months to ensure compliance of the Air Conditioner and its related components, including the Hermetic Compressor and Temperature Sensors.
