BIS Certification for Reverse Osmosis (RO) Based Point of Use (PoU) Water Treatment System

Bureau of Indian Standards has developed IS 16240: 2015 for Reverse Osmosis (RO) based Point of Use (PoU) Water Treatment System and providing Type approval for RO based Water Purifier.

This standard applies to reverse osmosis (RO) based point-of-use (POU) water treatment systems with a capacity of up to 25 litres per hour that reduce water TDS, reduce chemical contamination to safe levels, and remove physical particles, including microbiological pollutants. The standard excludes media and other consumables such as filters.

The specifications outlined in the standard shall be followed in the design and construction of the RO system. It is mandatory to obtain BIS certification for the RO system as per IS 16240: 2015. The manufacturer must get a BIS license for the RO system from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the Standard ISI Mark in accordance with Indian Standard IS 16240 (as amended from time to time) under Scheme-I, Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. A BIS license for a Reverse Osmosis (RO) Based Point-of-Use (PoU) Water Treatment System is required to ensure that the product complies with applicable Indian standards. By getting BIS certification, manufacturers can acquire consumer trust and continue to export/import and sell their products in the Indian market.
