BIS certification for Ethylene Glycol

The Bureau of Indian Standards has developed IS 5295:1985 for Ethylene Glycol. This standard specifies the requirements and the sampling and testing techniques for ethylene glycol, which is used in antifreeze formulations, explosives, organic intermediates, and polyester fibers and filaments.

While the BIS certification scheme is voluntary, the central government has made compliance with Indian standards mandatory for many products for various reasons, including public interest, human, animal, or plant health protection, environmental safety, unfair trade practice prevention, and national security. For such products, certain central government line ministries mandate using a standard mark under a BIS licence via QCOs. The Ministry of Chemicals and Fertilizers has issued Ethylene Glycol (Quality Control) Order, 2022. As per this order, obtaining BIS certification for Ethylene Glycol is mandatory as per IS 5295:1985. It will go into effect on the 28th of March, 2023.

This QCO stipulates that Ethylene Glycol shall comply with the Indian Standard IS 5295:1985 and bear the Standard Mark under a license from the Bureau. Manufacturers must get a BIS license for Ethylene Glycol from the Bureau of Indian Standards to use the Standard ISI Mark as per Indian Standard IS 5295 (as amended from time to time) under Scheme-I, Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018. A BIS license for Ethylene Glycol is required to ensure that the product complies with applicable Indian standards.
