BIS Certification For Fire Resistant Steel
To maintain high standards of quality and safety in the steel industry, the Ministry of Steel has recently issued the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024. This step is empowered by various sections of the Bureau of Indian Standards. Act, 2016 is an important step towards ensuring that domestically manufactured steel and steel products meet the required specifications and standards.
The new order, which replaces its predecessor from 2020, comes into force on its publication in the Official Gazette, except in cases made before this change. One of the notable provisions of this order is the exemption given to domestically manufactured steel and steel products that comply with the specifications required by foreign buyers for export purposes. This includes specifications for special products such as fire resistant steel.
Under the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, it is mandatory for all specified steel and steel products to comply with the relevant Indian Standard 15103:2002. Additionally, these products should be accompanied by a test certificate bearing the standard mark issued by a manufacturer certified under the Bureau of Indian Standards. This requirement ensures transparency and accountability in the production and distribution of steel products.
Furthermore, to further strengthen confidence in the quality of steel products, the order states that goods and articles meeting specified standards must bear the standard mark under license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. It conforms to Scheme – I of Schedule – II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018, thereby ensuring that consumers can easily identify products that meet the required standards.
The Bureau of Indian Standards has been entrusted with the responsibility of certifying this order and ensuring its compliance. This designation underscores the importance of regulatory oversight in maintaining industry standards and protecting consumer interests.
Importantly, there is a provision of penalty under Section 29 of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016 for non-compliance of any provision of this order. This emphasizes the seriousness with which the Government views the observance of quality control measures in the steel industry.
It is worth noting that any future amendments or modifications to the Indian Standards specified in the order by the Bureau of Indian Standards will automatically apply to this order upon their publication. This ensures that the regulatory framework remains dynamic and responsive to the evolving needs of the industry and technological advancements.
Finally, the Steel and Steel Products (Quality Control) Order, 2024, reflects the government's commitment to promote excellence and safety in the steel industry. By setting clear standards, enforcing compliance and imposing penalties for non-compliance, the order aims to strengthen consumer confidence, foster innovation and promote sustainable growth in the steel sector.
