Bis Certification For Safes
The Ministry of Commerce & Industry has introduced a quality control directive known as the Safes, Safe Deposit Locker Cabinets, and Key Locks (Safes) (Quality Control) Order, 2023. Starting six months after this directive is published in the Official Gazette, it will become effective. According to this directive, items such as safes, safe deposit locker cabinets, and key locks must meet the Indian Standard 550 (Part 1): 2014 requirements. Additionally, these items must bear a special mark called the Standard Mark, which can only be used if the manufacturer holds a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards. This license is issued based on Scheme-1 from Schedule-II of the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
However, there are exceptions to this directive. It does not apply to items produced in the country for export purposes. Furthermore, micro-enterprises and small enterprises (defined under the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006) are exempt from the directive's requirements for twelve months and nine months, respectively, from the publication date.
The Bureau of Indian Standards will be responsible for both certifying and enforcing this directive for safes, safe deposit locker cabinets, and key locks. If anyone fails to comply with the rules in this directive, they may face penalties as per the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016.
