Bis Certification For Furniture Beds
The Ministry of Commerce and Industry has recently issued the Furniture (Quality Control) Order, 2023, a Quality Control Order that mandates compliance with the Indian Standard 17635:2022 for Beds and the display of the Standard Mark on all furniture goods or articles. According to this order, furniture products must obtain a license from the Bureau of Indian Standards, following Scheme I of Schedule II as per the Bureau of Indian Standards (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
However, there are exceptions to this order. It does not apply to goods or articles produced domestically for export. Micro and small enterprises, as defined in the Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises Development Act, 2006, are exempt from this order for eighteen months from its publication. Additionally, enterprises registered under the Udyam Portal of the Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, with limited investment and turnover, are also exempt from this order.
The Bureau of Indian Standards serves as the certification and enforcement authority for furniture goods or articles under this order. Violation of this order carries penalties as per the provisions of the Bureau of Indian Standards Act, 2016. Any individual found contravening these regulations shall be subject to legal consequences outlined in the mentioned Act.
