What are the standards applicable for toys?

Each toy is subject to more than one Indian standard, but in order to make the process easier for manufacturers, the ministry has decided to categorize them into two types: electric and non-electric toys.

One primary standard will be used to grant a license for each type, and secondary standards will be used to determine whether additional testing is required. The manufacturer must ensure that their toys conform to applicable Indian standards.

The manufacturer must obtain a BIS licence from the Bureau of Indian Standards in order to use the ISI mark on toys. Manufacturers who apply for BIS Certification may select one of the above standards based on the type of toy to maximise the efficiency and ease of certification.

BIS will test the samples for conformance to the applicable primary and secondary standards, and toys shall meet the requirements of the applicable Standard. After testing, BIS will grant a license to the manufacturer to use the ISI mark on toys.

Aleph INDIA served the industry as a single window for all product regulatory compliance. Aleph India can help importers and manufacturers to meet all of the requirements for importing or selling a product in the Indian market and get their product certified from BIS.
