WHAT IS A COMPULSORY REGISTRATION SCHEME?
The Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is a scheme under BIS to protect Indian consumers from spurious and substandard products. Under this scheme, Manufacturers need to get their Electronic and IT products registered by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) based on self-declaration of conformity for goods and articles as per the requirement of relevant Indian Standards before launching them in the market.
The Compulsory Registration Scheme Order is that no person shall manufacture, import, sell or distribute goods that do not conform to the specified Indian standard and do not bear the Standard Mark with unique R-number obtained from BIS. Manufacturers are required to apply for BIS registration after getting their product tested from a BIS-approved laboratory.
Under CRS, BIS grants a license to a manufacturer to use Standard Mark based on self-declaration of conformity of the product through the application submitted by them indicating that they have the necessary infrastructure for manufacturing quality products with requisite testing facilities continuously at their premises.
Compulsory Registration Scheme (CRS) is operated by BIS for Electronic and IT equipment, solar photovoltaic goods, low-voltage switch gear under Scheme-II, Schedule-II of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations 2018. The grant of license and its operation under the Compulsory Registration Scheme is carried out as per the conformity assessment scheme of BIS (Conformity Assessment) Regulations, 2018.
